Frequently
Asked Questions:
What is indoor karting?
Karting or Go-karts is well known as an outdoor activity. Now,
you can race indoors everyday - and we supply everything
you need. Indoor karting is extremely popular in Europe where
there are hundreds of centers. The sport is growing here in
the US and our ¼ mile technically challenging track provides
real racing for ages 8 to 80. You'll compete against your own
personal best times and you will be racing against others as
well in a safe, exciting environment. Many of today's
professional drivers got their start in karting - names like
Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Michael Andretti, Al Unser, Michael
Schumacher, Rusty Wallace, and Ayrton Senna. Come and see why
indoor karting at Grand Prix Greensboro is the best thrill for
your recreational dollar.
How old do I need to be?
We have karts specially designed for junior racers ages 8 to
15 and more powerful karts for ages 16 and above. Juniors
have to be at least 48" tall to ride. Minors (under the
age of 18) must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who can
sign
the waiver form for them.
Is it safe?
Indoor karting has an excellent safety record. We provide DOT
rated safety helmets and padded neck braces. Our karts have
special seats with seat belts and roll-over bars and protection
barriers around the entire machine. We use a special remote
control system on each kart to slow or stop the action if the
track is blocked or if someone is not driving safely. Our track
marshals are located around the track to help out and to see
that racers are obeying the rules they learned about during
the pre-race safety briefing. Our track has an approved safety
barrier system utilizing retired NASCAR racing tires and
heavy-duty plastic plates. All you need is to wear closed-toe
shoes.
Can I bring my own kart?
We provide all the equipment including our state-of-the-art
Sodi racing karts. See the Karts page on our website for more
information on these fabulous machines.
Can I bring my own helmet?
Yes - as long as it is a full coverage helmet with a visor and
it is DOT approved. This pretty much eliminates motocross style
helmets. If we can't see the sticker, we can't allow the helmet.
How slick is the track?
Our specially prepared concrete surface and racing tires provide
incredible grip. You can expect to feel 1.5 G's in the turns.
How fast do the karts go?
You'll feel like it's a 100 mph, but it's really not. Our junior
karts will reach about 15 mph and the adult karts will see about
25 to 30.
What
is a race like?
A heat race consists of an 8 minute race, usually running between
12-14 laps on the track. Your heat race is tracked by your best
lap time. So you can start first or last and still beat others
in your heat!
Can Junior racers be out on the track
with adults?
We only allow the Junior racers to race with each other. Adults
will race in their own heats. Safety and enjoyment of the
racing experience are our primary goals.
How will I know how I am doing?
Our automated timing and scoring system will track your times
for every lap. At the end of your session you will receive a
customized lap timing sheet for every lap you ran. You'll see
how you compare to others in your heat and to the best times
for the day, week, and month.
Can I bump into other racers?
No. This is not bumper-cars at the county fair. These are high
performance racing karts. Our track marshals will manage the
racing so that everyone has a great time. Faster drivers will
be flagged around the slower traffic.
How much experience do I need before
I come to race?
Not a bit. Our expert staff will brief you on how to operate
the karts, safety tips, and the meaning of the flags that you
may
see while racing. There is no clutch and no gears to shift.
One foot operates the gas pedal and the other operates the
brakes.
Are gals welcome?
Absolutely. In fact, lots of women race karts at indoor centers.
More and more women are entering motorsports as racers
and most of them are starting in karts. We expect to have a
special for ladies when they can race at reduced prices.
Do I have to become a member in order
to race?
No. However, becoming a member will entitle you to reduced prices,
multi-race packages, free races when you join and
during your birthday month, and other specials that we will
offer from time to time. Junior racers will need to become
members and attend our special racing school unless they are
part of a birthday party event. See our website for more
information on the benefits of becoming a member at Grand Prix
Greensboro.
Can I bring a group?

group sizes from 8 to 100 or more. Call our sales staff or just

waiting to race?

air hockey and billiards. We will also have soft drinks, snacks
and the latest energy drinks to get you ready for that next
heat. Our special viewing areas will allow you to see the action
from inside the heated and air conditioned lobby or trackside.
Special viewing screens will allow you to keep up with the
action on the track. Cheer for your buddies!
Is alcohol available?
Sorry, but alcohol consumption and racing aren't a good mix.
We have a zero tolerance policy in place regarding drinking.
We reserve the right to make the racing safe for everyone and
we will use our portable breathalyzer if we think it's needed.
